Renovations have begun on a former Pathmark along the Woodbridge border that will be transformed into a new fitness center.

Renovations began earlier this month, about two weeks ago, on the space that will be home to a 24 Hour Fitness. The gym will occupy about 36,000 square feet, roughly the southern half of the 86,000-square-foot Delco Plaza complex on St. Georges Avenue that also includes a Kmart. The northern half of the building would have one or two more retail tenants. Previously tenants included a nail salon and liquor store and there also  was a Subway that occupied a space within the Pathmark.

The Delco Plaza on St. Georges Avenue, set about 400 feet back, is actually split by the border between Rahway and Woodbridge. The site is almost 15 acres in all, with the former Pathmark comprising less than 7 acres. Of those 7 acres, about 3.7 acres are situated in Rahway and 2.8 acres are within the Avenel section of Woodbridge.

The Rahway Planning Board in December 2016 unanimously approved an application before approvals were granted from Woodbridge as well as Middlesex and Union counties.

The property also includes 29,000-square-foot Boston Market and a 200-square-foot bank kiosk, both of which are closer to the entrance on St. Georges Avenue.

The 3.7-acre site that is located within Rahway’s border was once among six areas identified to be studied for potential redevelopment by the city a few years ago.

Pathmark was founded in Woodbridge in 1968 and headquartered in Iselin. It was acquired by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) in 2010 but filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015. All Pathmark stores were either closed or sold to other chains; some locations reopened as Acme, Key Food and Stop & Shop, and ShopRite, among others.
