A multi-purpose arts space will fill the former Woolworth building, 1433 Main St., at least for the near future.
The property was acquired by Landmark Companies, developers of Park Square, but has been leased to Rahway Cafe and Stage for two years until they come up with a plan for it. Eric Harvitt of Landmark Companies said they’re still deciding on concept proposals for the property.
The approximately 6,000-square-foot space will be used for practice/rehearsals, showcases and receptions while the front area will be open all the time as a cafe/lounge and retail area selling the works of local artists, according to general manager Marc Calamares.
“We figured the space would be perfect for our purpose, and would also coincide in the direction in which the city wants to move,” said Calamares, who expects to open before the end of this month.
i was hopeful this eyesour would be knocked down
Great!

Rahway residents be aware of a recent rash of break-ins at the Riverwalk Development. 4 properties have been broken into in the middle of the day by a light skin black with a thin mustash who knocks on the door and if you answer ask for a stranger. If no one is home, he kicks in the front door. BEWARE of the Door Knocker Thief.

Interesting comment re: Riverwalk. I went last weekend to check out a unit there for rental (current owner trying to cut his/her losses?) with an agent in an effort to attain some more space. The lock was kind of hard to open, so she turned the key over to me to try to get the lock open. The short of it is someone had forcibly been in there because the deadbolt clearly went smashing through the door frame as evidenced by the torn up molding and whatever else you’d expect to find as a result of kicking a door in. Oh, and there were some suitcases and other containers that had been gone through on the living room floor. I’m going to guess that the burglar was in a hurry, or just plain stupid as the second floor seemed to have been untouched. There was a computer and some network gear all left intact. Shame, because it was really a nice place at a decent asking price compared to what I’m paying now in the area. I didn’t need to continue the tour once I got inside to see this, however.
“i was hopeful this eyesour would be knocked down”Maybe they’ll change the sign!
Do you have evidence of these break-ins or are you just starting bad rumors? I’ve seen nothing of this mentioned in the police blotters for Rahway that I’ve read or in any local news.
Of course not!
What I witnessed was the prior Saturday (7/19) and cannot comment on anonymous of 7/24 @ 10pm. I don’t know if the Realtor that showed me the place filed a report (I imagine if you really want to burn me and my alleged motive, you can call the Rahway PD), but if all of you anonymous folks get your kicks out of discrediting everything you read here, so be it.I don’t recall any of my posts where I’ve said anything terribly negative about Rahway, however maybe I wasn’t enthused enough about the choice of coffee houses coming into the Skyview?
Police reports are public information and are published frequently in the Ledger. So I don’t need to call the Rahway PD to know that these stories are probably false since there has been no mention of this. I would think that if there was “rash” of break-ins that this would have been reported. That’s all I’m saying. Also your story makes no sense. You assume that the landlord might be trying to “cut losses” by renting it out? How do you come to that conclusion? The door was “forcibly kicked in” and the doorframe was “torn up” yet you couldn’t get the door open because of the lock?? And how would you know whether the place was left untouched or robbed when you never went there before and wouldn’t know if something was missing.I don’t what people’s motives are for lying but these posts certainly don’t add up.
…geez Larry, you are clearly unfamiliar with the rules of Rahway Rising.#1 – The first rule of Rahway Rising is you do not talk about Rahway Rising.#2 – The second rule of Rahway Rising is you DO NOT talk about Rahway Rising#3 – If you have something negative to say about Rahway, keep it to yourself because everyone knows there is no crime in Rahway, EVER!#4 – Articles you read in the paper about bank robberies, house robberies, SWAT teams being called in to drug houses, corrupt politicians, people being mugged at knife point at the train station, etc. are all fabricated by the local papers. DO NOT TRUST WHAT YOU READ. The MSM is trying to take down Rahway.#5 – If you purchase property in Rahway, it will be worth 5% more the next day and 5% more each and every day you own it for the rest of your life – Guaranteed.#6 – Rahway schools send dozens of kids to ivy league schools each year – all covertly, you will never hear about it. Trust Us.July 25th 10:38, you sad sack of pathetic contempt for all that is honest in this world. Obviously you are one of the many RiverWalk owners who has lost a fortune in their greedy attempt to profit quickly from a hot real estate market now gone sour. Do you cry as you decide whether to pay your mortgage or your credit card bills each week? Can you no longer afford to buy tissues to dry your tears as they stream down your face and onto your checkbook as you redo the math ten times. Surely, there must be another $40 somewhere. The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but no vision. Duct tape those rose-colored glasses to your face my friend. The truth hurts.
There are so many negative people in this world it’s a shame. Things happen in every town. Now its up to the people that occupy a town on whether they will band together not to let whats going on to continue. Look out for one another, you see some one acting strange call the police. That will deter the knuckle heads.
