During his report to the Redevelopment Agency at its Dec. 8 meeting, Executive Director Robert Landolfi said Tesla Development has restarted the acquisition process for the proposed 300-unit Bridgeview project. Specifically, the developer is trying to obtain a residential property that it has not been able to get under contract. “They feel they’ll be able to do that in early 2022,” he told commissioners, and “hopefully we’ll be seeing Bridgeview back in soon.”
An initial concept plan presented in 2017 proposed 174 units across two buildings on about 1.8 acres, taking up about existing properties. A new plan presented in 2020 expanded the concept to about 300 units on the entire block surrounded by Clarkson Place, Bridge, Essex and Monroe streets – about 3 acres and nearly a dozen properties. The revised development also proposes bisecting the block with a new street, making for a smaller, more walkable block, according to developers. A similar concept was followed with The Mint by extending Monroe Street past Main Street, with buildings on either side of Monroe.
The revised plan also would create three new park spaces: a double row of trees along Monroe Street, another along Clarkson Place, and a triangular park at Essex and Bridge streets.
A year ago, the Redevelopment Agency approved a pre-development agreement with Tesla Development, allowing the agency to participate in the acquisition process. One of the issues on the site is a PSE&G substation at Monroe Street and Clarkson Place that would have to be relocated, if possible. The agency submitted an offer for one of six Essex Street homes included in the concept plan and a potential site for PSE&G also has been found, Landolfi said in February.
