The city is moving to acquire an East Hazelwood Avenue property adjacent to the Department of Public Works (DPW) facility on Hart Street for possible future expansion of the DPW headquarters.
City Council introduced an ordinance (O-15-16) at its June 11 meeting followed by a public hearing and final approval at its July 11 meeting to acquire the for Healthworks facility at 1044 E. Hazelwood Ave.
The current DPW facility at 999 Hart St. is located across a dead-end street from the 0.2-acre parcel to be acquired. City Administrator Cherron Roundtree said the process has only begun, with negotiations still to come, but the site could eventually be used for any number of DPW purposes, including equipment storage.
The East Hazelwood Avenue site (Block 340, Lot 1) is assessed for $311,800, generating a property tax bill of almost $21,000 this year, according to property records. The parcel would come off the tax rolls once it’s owned by the city.
