By a rare non-unanimous vote of 7-1, the governing body adopted a resolution (AR-95-24) awarding a Class 5 retail license to Plantabis Dispensary during its regular meeting on Monday night. Councilman At-large Jeremy Mojica was the lone dissenting vote. He explained his vote later on during the council comments portion of the meeting.
“It’s not about me,” Mojica said. “It’s just about how I was raised. I’m a man of strong faith. I grew up in a household where these types of things were unacceptable,” he said, adding that as a father, he would not accept it in his household.
A year ago, City Council adopted a resolution in support of Plantabis receiving a license from the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC). The CRC issued a conditional license in September.
City ordinances allow for two licenses in each of the five types of facilities created by the state: retail, cultivation, manufacturing, delivery, wholesale, and retail.
The Planning Board last summer approved an application for a minor site plan and conditional use at 2077 Route 1 , a former White Castle site, which also previously was a seafood restaurant.
Plantabis Dispensary. which describes itself as a “minority and woman-owned company,” is scheduled to host a grand opening on Friday.
