NOTE: The original headline of this post incorrectly stated “Council supports two marijuana dispensaries.” As noted in the post below, the two locations are for cultivation and/or manufacturing — not dispensaries — as the new city ordinances does not allow retail. Apologies for any confusion.
City Council approved a resolution last week (AR-279-21) “supporting the establishment and operation of facilities for cannabis cultivation and/or manufacturing” at two locations that are only about 1 mile apart:
- Saucey Farms at 293 St. Georges Ave., (site of the former Galaxy Diner)
- Aeterna, LLC, at 211 E. Inman Ave.
This past summer, the governing body approved legislation that would allow five of six types of cannabis licenses in light industrial and heavy industrial zones. Only retail businesses are prohibited at this point. On-site consumption of marijuana would be prohibited as would marijuana-derived products, including smoking, ingesting edibles, or applying topical applications.
The two properties are “suitable to be developed with facilities for the construction and operation of cannabis cultivation facilities, both indoor and greenhouse facilities; manufacturing, production, packaging, and transportation of cannabis products, including edibles, ointments, oils, concentrates, and similar and comparable products, the sale of cannabis and cannabis products to other product manufacturing facilities and to retail cannabis stores, and to any other related or ancillary use, except for the dispensing of cannabis or sale to uses of cannabis, to take place at the property, all of the foregoing for medicinal and recreational ,” according to the resolution.
City Council will begin all necessary actions, if any, within 30 days of the award of a licensure by the state Department of Health to Aeterna, LLC and Saucey Farms to establish and operate a facility for cannabis cultivation and manufacturing, according to the resolution.
The state Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) earlier this month awarded provisional licenses to 30 companies — 10 each in the central, northern and southern regions of the state — in addition to the 23 previously licensed.
The CRC began accepting applications for recreational cannabis on Dec. 15: Class 1 Cultivator Licenses, Class 2 Manufacturer Licenses and Testing Laboratories. Applications for Class 5 Retailers will begin being accepted March 15, 2022.
Almost 500 individuals and entities established accounts in the first four hours, according to the CRC. By 1 p.m. the application platform was averaging 155 new users per hour.
The state’s cannabis laws recognize “the necessity of ensuring that nay potential licensees/permitees have the support of the local community, as evidenced by a resolution adopted by a municipality’s governing body indicating that the intended location is appropriately located or otherwise suitable for the activities related to cultivation and/or manufacturing of cannabis, cannabis products, and related supplies as will be conducted at the proposed facility,” according to the resolution.

Now do a dispensary, too!
Why put a dispensary on St. George’s ave the main route thru Rahway there’s enough traffic there already. If your going to have a dispensary in town please locate it to a location off the main roadway of daily use, also the smell wouldn’t be welcoming…find a location around Rt 1 on highway easy access in and out of town like Woodbridge has done away from the general functions of our Town !! When I go to ShopRite in Woodbridge you can smell the weed aroma in the parking lot daily..
