Each of the department’s 16 marked vehicles will have a dashboard camera upgraded and each uniformed patrol officer — about 60.
The dashboard cameras are about 10 years old and body cameras are about six to seven years old, all of which will be upgraded, according to the city’s public relations coordinator, Lauren Ferrigno.
The department’s body cameras predated a Union County program that provided grant funding for body cameras. Funding for the camera upgrades will come from the operating budget, according to City Administrator Robert Landolfi. The city’s $56.7 operating budget for 2020, adopted in April, includes appropriations for the Police Department of $9,258,626, including $8,826,626 in salaries and wages.
