A two-story West Grand Avenue building is looking better after a facelift and ready to welcome its first retail tenant, a deli.
The building at 291-301 W. Grand Ave. (Block 222, Lot 8) will have two retail tenants on the ground floor of 850 and 900 square feet, and two, two-bedroom apartments on the second floor.
A deli, which also does some catering and banquet work, is slated to occupy the right side of the ground floor space, said owner Rafael Ortiz, signing a two-year lease with an option for three more years at $1,200 a month. A liquor store had interest in the other retail space but was rebuffed by the city‘s Zoning Office, he said.
As reported on Rahway Rising, the Zoning Board granted approval almost a year ago, granting the same variances given to previous developers.
Located at the corner of West Grand Avenue and Newton Place, the property sold for $165,000 in August 2007, and before that $155,000 in June 2003, according to tax records. Assessed at $179,500, the 0.1518-acre site paid about $8,365 in property taxes last year.
If you think the outside of this bldg. looked scary before, the inside was just unbelievable. Between what the previous owner tried to do structurally & the different 'critters' that called this place home, the outcome is like night & day.
