The ground-floor facade of the burned out building at 65 E. Cherry St. collapsed over the weekend. It’s likely that it occurred sometime between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.
The Redevelopment Agency considered buying the property last summer and last spring was looking into possibly demolishing the structure. Dornoch purchased the property for $65,000 from the Parking Authority and more than three years ago had proposed renovations to the Planning Board.
The two-story building has been vacant since a fire destroyed the beauty supply shop in the summer of 2005.

I stopped by there yesterday morning to pick up some delicious pastries at aromalicious which by the way are very modestly priced and has a great friendly atmosphere.What a sad sight Cherry street has become empty stores with abandoned widown displays. if we cant change the town overnight, lets at least try to make it presentablewho is in charge here?
I guess it is time for someone to get to work on this… thing is..what would they put there..hmmmmmmmmmmmmI got an idea. How about a small Apple retail store so local people won't have to go to Menlo Mall. Sounds crazy yes, but.. if it was built fresh and new maybe then I couldget a job.
I walked by last night and a fence had been installed in front of the facade.The issue is the building is probably worth less than the cost to demolish it. When you consider that Dornoch, which owns the property, suggested the city place a lien on the Savoy property as a means to pay for simple fencing around that site, I doubt they'll be razing it anytime soon.But who knows, they have talked to others about purchasing the site.
It's getting time that the city seize the properties and sell them cheap to someone who can do something with them. The current owners all along that section of town have been sitting on them for years, expecting that they will soon be worth tons of money. But they'll never be worth a thing while you're all just sitting on them. Rent them cheap, to artists, to anyone. If you don't, we'll declare them neglected and use eminent domain.
I was by 65 E. Cherry on my way home last night. I can't see how that fence is going to keep out inquisitive teenagers (or anyone else). Even I, an overweight, middle-aged woman could jump that thing if I put my mind to it. It's been an eyesore and now, it's a deathtrap as well. A sad comment on the state of the town if nobody steps up to completely tear that thing down.
Maybe we can start by asking the Chamber of commerce during their meeting tomorrow at 8:30 PM at the Masonic Lodge, 1550 Irving Stits open to the public, I am planning to attend. it has become more than just an eyesore…

Silv, I agree, plus it is right across the street from a bar. How many days until some drunkin goon falls over and instant lawsuit.Oh and I added Aromalicious to Google maps because they weren't on there..
Good going Zincink. I've been over to Aromalicioius several times now and out of everything there, I'm addicted to these little seafood pastries they have. Really excellent and I count myself lucky if they still have some when I get home from work. The shop is nice and well-kept, food is good, and the owners are very pleasant people so I'm hoping this one succeeds!
