The governing body introduced an ordinance (O-24-24) at its regular meeting on July 8 that aims to address speeding and traffic safety concerns in the busy intersection. The ordinance is scheduled to come up for a public hearing and final adoption at the regular meeting on Monday night.
Currently, the intersection has a two-way stop sign along Stone Street. A temporary electronic sign at the intersection advises citizens: “Coming Soon, Jefferson & Stone, 4-Way Stop.”
The intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Stone Street is particularly significant due to its proximity to two major landmarks, causing heightened vehicular and pedestrian traffic. It is near the main entrance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway and serves as a common walkway for the students and staff from Rahway High School. The intersection is already home to a four-way crosswalk.
The change will have Jefferson Avenue and Stone Street among other multi-stop intersections in the neighborhood, the latest of which is the intersection of West Lake and Madison avenues. The addition of a four-way traffic stop and flashing stop sign was adopted in 2018, less than two weeks after a pedestrian was killed crossing the intersection. During the City Council meeting where that was adopted, members of the public advocated for more four-way stops to be added on the surrounding streets, including Jefferson Avenue.
