Hearing on 2011 municipal budget tonight

City Council tonight will hold a public hearing on the 2011 municipal budget during its regular meeting tonight at 7 p.m.

The $44.9-million budget will raise approximately $31.1 million from property taxes. Officials tout that appropriations have increased only 1.3 percent over last year while being below the state-mandated caps, though the exact impact of the budget on the average assessed home is unclear.

Sunday’s Star-Ledger had this story that examines Rahway’s redevelopment efforts over the years and the state of downtown. I’m not sure I would call the 50-unit St. Georges Avenue apartment complex that went up in flames this month a “symbolic achievement” as much as other downtown projects, like the 222-unit Carriage City Plaza or 159-unit Park Square (which didn’t even warrant a mention in the piece). What did everyone else think?

  1. The unit that burned really has zero impact on the 'city' itself. It wasn't even within decent walking distance of the inner city area in the first place. I guess they figure any news is good news to promote the area and get people talking. I have to say it did get people to comment, just not in a positive way. Remember comments about Asbury "the ghosttown", "rundown" blahblahbalhb..You just don't snap your fingers and blammo your town is booming. It takes time, promotion, and people who believe in it.

  2. The article had a negative spin but could had more positive information. Park Square is finishing second building. It's first building is full and all the commercial space has been rented. New remodeled restaurant in the El Bogadon has opened, A new portguese restaurant is to open soon, Rail House Rest has opened. The City is moving forward with the amphitheater and black box theater. have things slowed down becasue of the economy – yes but what other towns are seeing this kind of activity and commitment? Rahway is well positioned to continue to move in the right direction as the economy begins to grow.

  3. Just curious for those who live downtown — now that the Park Square apartments are full (at least, the first building is reported full) is there a noticeable difference in foot-traffic in downtown Rahway? That seems to be the horse that will need to pull the cart of Rahway's redevelopment from here on out.

  4. I'm sorry, but I couldn't get through the entire article. The spin of it made me sick. You could pick and chose carefully what you want to say about anything, and the author just did that – gee, what a surprise, another negative article about Rahway in the Star Ledger. While the magazine was very kind to me to do an article on my store, the paper itself always seems to have a sarcastic, negative tone to the articles written about Rahway. I had to move out because it just wasn't happening fast enough for what my finances could allow – would I come back? In a heartbeat. I believed in the town for the 20 years I was there, still live here and still believe it's gonna happen. The step backwards to move forward happens all over, ours just happened simultaneously with the economy. I miss having my business downtown and wish the best of luck to Aromalicious (sp)as my store was on Cherry St for years. This article kinda got my 'Jersey Up'..Stay positive.
