It better do my laundry and wash my car too

I’m no coffee dork — can I be if I only drink it black? — I just want a decent coffeehouse downtown. An $11,000 coffee machine might be a bit much though, don’t you think? Come to think of it, that’s more than I paid for my sweet ride.

Did you know Rahway ranks 16th among the stations in the NJ Transit system with 3,014 average weekday boardings (not including transfers)? Just a bit of trivia I was interested in the last time I spoke with NJ Transit. A spokesman also mentioned that the Department of Community Affairs approved the lease for a new tenant at the Moca Motion space; now the DCA must OK building permits before the tenant can hire contractors, etc.

We’re in our fifth month of existence but it’s only been about two months since we started tracking readership with Google Analytics, among others. Last week we surpassed 4,000 visits to the blog (we get almost 100 each weekday) and now have more than 50 readers who subscribe by email. It’s all through word of mouth and mostly stumbling upon us through Internet searches (trust me, I don’t have that many friends and family). Thanks to everyone who’s been interested in this little hobby of mine and to everyone who’s offered their input, suggestions or questions over the last few months.

  1. Hi Mark,I stumbled across your website one day last week and I must say I love it. I referred it to my friends as well. Very informative and clean. Great job and keep it up! I start my day by checking your site and my inbox for updates. :)rclark290@comcast.net

  2. Mark:Love this blog. I live in Woodbridge but have been a Rahway “visitor” for over 30 years. My girls went to Devaney Dance Studio, we shopped at Marks Harris, Woolworth’s, Tarnished Swan, ate at Fulton, Rahway Grill and I worked at the Rahway Service League Thrift Shop for over 20 years. Loved the large gift shop that was housed on Cherry Street run by Bernadette and her two daughters until they moved to PA. Always loved the variety of shops offered and small eateries. Am happy to see the town coming back and my only disappointment is Sky View. Much too tall and modern for my taste. Love your idea of a coffee shop and suggest a small supermarket a few blocks from the heart of town. Look forward to reading your blogs. P.S. Tried Cubanu after reading your blog and we, too, found many “missteps”. Did not have a good experience but will try again in a few months.

  3. I would love a coffee house in downtown Rahway. It’ll be nice to wake up and get a decent cup of coffee and a decent bagel right in my neighborhood. I am a little shocked that we’re ranked 16th amongst train stations and have nothing to offer commuters except a heated waiting room and overpriced taxis waiting to take you to your destination. I also wonder how well the corner store is doing being the closest place to the train station that you can get a cup of coffee.

  4. Yes, the last place that served decent coffee downtown was Reggie’s Roast on Main Street that closed its doors about 2 or 3 years ago. Their coffee was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately the staff was absolutely indifferent to their customers. The Rahway Center Partnership conducted a survey last year asking people what kind of businesses they wanted to see downtown. I asked for a coffee shop and bakery so I can get a nice loaf of Italian bread to bring home for dinner.

  5. Mark,Well done with this blog. I stumbled on it thanks to an automated craigslist search which fed me Rahway listings. One of the Rahway realtors has been linking to your blog as a way of selling the city. That being said, my automated seach led to this gem: Riverwalk Short SaleWeren’t these units going for over 450k a year ago? If I can get a townhouse with a basement, fireplace and a garage for <350k, why on earth would I pay that much for a Skyview apartment or one of the new lofts? Whoever buys this one will not be welcomed by the other Riverwalk owners – a sale at the full list will take down the values of the other units by $100,000! If I'm in the coffee house demographic and I need city access, I'm buying in Hoboken, JC, or Manhattan, not Rahway. If I have a family and I have money, Westfield or Cranford fit the bill. Rahway is 10 years away from being a destination.

  6. coffee house’s do not work downtown. there were a few but the homeless closed them down with”hey buddy can ya spare 5$ for a cup of coffee?”,lol. getting mugged for a cup of joe is not worth it from those places that where here in town. d+d’s would be nice,no starbutts please.

  7. You might see some of these machines popping up, now that Starbucks has bought the company. They just announced the acquisition this week at their annual shareholder meeting. As far as I know, Starbucks will not be expanding into laundry or car detailing services.

  8. Great blog! Downtown Rahway definitely needs a good coffee shop. Whether it’s a Starbucks or an independent coffee shop, I wouldn’t mind either way. I think once more people start moving into the new buildings downtown there will be much more of a market and we’ll see a coffee shop open up.

  9. Not Considering Rahway (NCR), That’s a pretty common argument I’ve heard re: Hoboken, JC, etc. Great nugget of info to contribute but actually those units were going for $450,000 *much* less than a year ago, according to the property transactions published in The Star-Ledger. The listings don’t indicate how many bedrooms/baths, just the price, buyer and seller. Two recent listings had Riverwalk as sellers: — $549,900, Danchetz Court, (appeared 2/28) — $447,900, Genovese Lane (1/19) From my experience, the listing could be anywhere from 6-12 weeks since the actual transaction went through, so the sale could have closed as long ago as October, maybe September? The streets are too new to link to to Google Maps, but they’re the two at the end of Essex, off Hancock (closest to 1/9).

  10. I researched the address for the short sale I posted and the bank is taking a hit. I don’t remember the address or number, so for once I don’t have supporting facts.Currently 1334 Genovese Lane, Unit 1009 is listed for 599,900. The seller paid 564,000 for it in May 07. She’s looking for a 35k payday, although she needs her list price to cover her realtor fees. I wish her the best of luck.

  11. Did You Know that most of us are spending about $15+ a gallon for coffee at an average of $4.65 a cup….and to think everyone is up in arms about the price of gas. huh, go figure. At those rates it’s a good thing Rahway has a train station. Now, we need a coffee station, crap, hope corzine doesn’t decide to tax that next!
