Fourteen disparate properties throughout Rahway were hit with liens for cleanup costs totaling almost $7,500 associated with code enforcement violations, including at least five properties that have been cited previously.

During its March 14 regular monthly meeting, City Council approved a resolution (AR-62-22) authorizing the filing of liens against properties to recover cleanup costs incurred by the city, pursuant to sections of the city code.
The liens ranged from as little as $82.50, in two instances, to as much as $1,338.75 in this round of citations. The 14 properties included in the recent resolution were:
- 1022 Jefferson Av., Block 138/Lot 1 — $885
- 196 Lafayette St., Block 324/Lot 23 — $82.50
- 2254 Winfield St., Block 255/Lot 24 — $667.50
- 293 St. Georges Av., Block 7, Lot 4 — $185
- 327 Brookfield Place, Block 295/Lot 8.01 — $1,338.75
- 343 Albermarle St., Block 25/Lot 6 — $82.50
- 450 Seminary Av., Block 166/Lot 24 — $152.50
- 520 Seminary Av., Block 166/Lot 16 — $200
- 613 W. Hazelwood Av., Block 109/Lot 1 — $642.50
- 767 Leesville Av., Block 279/Lot 10 — $412.50
- 916 Broad St., Block 82/Lot 1 — $385
- Albermarle St and Madison Av, Block 25/Lot 15 — $1,090
- New Brunswick Av and Iva St, Block 283/Lot 4 — $110
- Seminary Ave and Church St, Block 166/Lot 14 — $1,200
Pursuant to city code, a code enforcement officer is authorized to serve notices to “abate nuisances including, but not limited to:
- Brush
- Weeds
- Ragweed
- Dead and dying trees
- Stumps
- Roots
- Obnoxious growth
- Filth
- Garbage
- Trash
- Debris
A code enforcement officer is authorized to “direct the removal of nuisances from property after notice of abatement is served and the mandatory compliance period has expired.” The code enforcement officer is “further authorized to certify the amount of the cost to abate the nuisances from the property.”
