The governing body introduced a measure (O-39-22) during its regular meeting in October, followed by a public hearing and final approval at its regular meeting in November.
The 31 liquor licenses in Rahway are regulated by the municipal Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board. The three-member board, which typically meets on the second Wednesday of every month, has the authority to grant and administer all liquor licenses within the city.
Businesses that sell alcohol will be able to stay open until 3 a.m. on weeknights — where previously the required closing time was 2 a.m. — and 4 a.m. on Sundays, where previously the requirement was a 3 a.m. closing time.
“No licensee shall sell, serve, deliver or allow, permit or suffer the sale, service or delivery of any alcoholic beverage, or allow, permit of suffer the consequence of any alcoholic beverage, on any licensed premises during the following hours:”
- Between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. when New Year’s Day falls on a weekday, and between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., when New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.
- On other weekdays, between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., and on other Sundays, between the hours of 4 a.m. and 9 a.m.
According to MyCentralJersey, Rahway’s hours for businesses selling alcohol “were not as lenient as other communities” and the city’s Special Improvement District (SID) wanted to extend the opportunity to stay open later to local businesses.
