The Union County Clerk’s Office officially certified election results on Friday afternoon and while there was no change in the six City Council races, the race for three seats to the Board of Education took a different turn since election night.

With the vast majority of voting occurring by mail-in ballot this year due to the coronavirus, the county clerk’s office posted nearly daily updates to the voting totals as mail ballots were counted.

The top three in the Board of Education election earned three-year terms on the nine-member board. In early preliminary results on election night, Dorian Timmons and Thomas O’Reilly were separated less than 70 votes, barely 1%, while Sean White ranked 5th but that was with just a fraction of the votes counted so far. On election night, most candidates had barely half of the votes with which they would ultimately end up.

There were 20,694 registered voters in Rahway this year.

Since most all of the votes were mail-in ballots this year, the county clerk’s office did not post a breakdown within each municipality. At the county level, Democrat Joe Biden carried Union County with 170,245 votes (67%) while Republican Donald Trump tallied 80,002 (31.5%).

The next local election for the nine-member governing body will be 2022, when the three at-large seats are up along with the mayor’s seat.
