Another of the Hamilton Laundry buildings went down late last week.
The demolition of the two-story building exposed the lower part the adjoining four-story building, showing what appears to be a sign about fur storage. We can add that to last month’s list of old downtown signs. Get your “Home of the Supagown” photos while you still can.
It was six years ago this month that then-Sen. Jon Corzine made the Hamilton Laundry one of his stops on a tour of Rahway. That’s when plans still called for an arts center and independent film theater. Due to flooding at the site last spring, the Hamilton Laundry site instead will be turned into a park and outdoor amphitheater by next fall.
Other interesting items that a simple Internet search yields about Hamilton Laundry includes these alleged OSHA violations from eight years ago.
yea awhile back when scumbage stein owned the laundry. the shame on you crew from the news was there for mister steins not so nice practices, lol. what a cheap skate bum he was. under payed workers, double chargeing his customers in ny, unsafe working conditions. i went for a job interveiw many yr’s ago and when i walked in he was screaming at his employees at the top of his lungs. well i walked out. there are so many things i had heard from employes that worked there some are so funny. if you live in rahway some of you might no some of the poor workers that had to put up with this shister. some good storys to about the bum when he went to lunch around town, very, very cheap tipper. lol
Lots of “used” brick in that pile. Is there any plan to salvage that?
maybe bush and chaney can sell them in iraq or afganistan to build there blowen up homes.
I guess the city will do their summer concert series at this new ampitheater? It would be great not to lug your own chair to an event, might get more people out too.Did anyone else see “Tina Turner” last week??
It looks like the Savoy could use some bricks. Those couple steel beams going up were obviously just something to encourage sales. That construction site has been a ghost town.
Does anyone know if there is a visual plan for the ampitheater yet?
I thought the same thing about the Savoy. They said the steel for the project was delayed yet one corner of it happens to show up-very strange! I guess a little steel is better than no steel.
“It looks like the Savoy could use some bricks. Those couple steel beams going up were obviously just something to encourage sales. That construction site has been a ghost town.”Me too. This reminds me of that strip mall skeleton that was on Rt. 1N in Avenel for years.Until they finally tore it down.
“Does anyone know if there is a visual plan for the ampitheater yet?” yes there is just google italy and you can find a whole buch of them left over from many hundred of years ago from the romans, hehe. except this one will be under water instead of like a few in the deserts of north africa. maybe they can do some moc sea battles in it. 😉
These pictures remind me of some of my Jersey City pictures on my blog. Down with the old building – up with the new.
