There’s always the annual Favorite Restaurant poll, we’ve had Favorite BYO restaurant specifically, but there’s a popular style of cuisine in Rahway for which we haven’t yet had a specific reader poll.

So, the monthly reader poll, sponsored by the Rahway Special Improvement District, for May is:
Of course, Latin encompasses a lot of different cuisines. What’s great about Rahway’s dining scene is the variety. Could there be more? Sure, that’s fair. As the survey results in the downtown strategic plan suggested, there’s not much diversity in night life and while there are bars, they are similar. Likewise, while there are many restaurants, there is not enough diversity in the type of cuisine and price point in the existing establishments, according to survey results.
Even specifically among Latin restaurants — and admittedly, that’s a pretty wide definition so it encompasses a lot — there’s quiet a bit of diversity in Rahway’s options. There’s Cuban, Portuguese, Peruvian, Mexican, and many more.
You’d be hard pressed to find more variety in the way of Latin restaurants than Rahway. There’s CubaNu, the longtime downtown staple that’s been there for some 15 years. There are’ more relative newcomers like Monchy’s, Portuguese Cuisine & Wine Bar, and Gigi’s Latin Bistro, opening in the former Mr. Apple Pie space on Irving Street, and there are others downtown, like Sabor Peruano and El Malinche. Of course, outside of downtown, there are longtime stalwarts like Beana’s Para Siempre on St. Georges Avenue and hidden gems like El Patron on New Brunswick Avenue.
As always, if you think there’s any place that’s missing in the poll options, let me know in the comments below, or choose Other and give me a heads up as to which joint that is and I’ll add them to the poll options.
