Call me crazy but is this the golden age of coffee in Rahway?

Sure, there’s no Starbucks that some folks have been clamoring for but there are three Dunkin’s and a Wawa for those who like franchises. There was a time not so long ago where the options for a downtown coffee shop were limited if not fleeting.
Who remembers Eat To the Beat on East Cherry Street? It was more than coffee but it was a great little neighborhood cafe. After it closed, it seemed a like a real void that wasn’t filled for some time, which I touched on in an earlier post this month. Now, there’s a few different options downtown and readers seem to agree there’s a clear 1 and 2 among coffee joints.
Here are the results of the April reader poll, sponsored by the Rahway Arts and Business Partnership (RABP), which asked readers:
What’s your favorite coffee in Rahway?
- Melao Cafe & Creamery — 71% (89/125 votes)
- The Coffee Box — 16% (20/125)
- Other — 5% (6/125)
- Flynn’s Pub House — 3% (4/125)
- Rahway Bagels — 2% (3/125)
- Apple Pie Bistro — 2% (2/125)
- D’Oh! — 1% (1/125)
There were a robust 125 votes in this month’s poll, which closed earlier this week. If I remember correctly, the early voting put Melao and The Coffee Box ahead of the pack, which had 12 options, including the usual Other.
In the first day that voting opened, an onslaught of 70+ votes came in, most for Melao Cafe & Creamery to give them an early lead.
It was after the first day of voting when the deluge came. An onslaught of 70+ votes came in, most for Melao Cafe & Creamery to give them a substantial early lead, ahead of not only the entire field but The Coffee Box as well.
Voting cooled off after that and Melao coasted to the top spot, with The Coffee Box a distant second. The rest of the field of five options that garnered votes managed to combine for just 16 of the 125 votes.
Only six options received votes plus a few folks who voted for “Other.” After the poll opened, a few readers suggested Flynn’s Pub House and Gyros Corner. They were added them to the list of options so perhaps a few of the 6 votes for “Other” were for those two before they were added to the poll options. Thanks to the readers who chimed in on adding them.
