It’s a great time of year to spend time outdoors (when it’s not a billion degrees), whether it’s a concert, dinner, drinks or just chilling at your “third place.”

The results for the monthly reader poll for June, sponsored by the Rahway Arts and Business Partnership (RABP), include some strictly outdoor spaces while others are more like “third places:”

The June reader poll started out with 20 options to choose from and ultimately, nine options received votes out of the total 39 cast. Flynn’s Pub House on Main Street took home the top spot for the second month in a row, this time garnering almost half of the 39 votes cast. The Irving Inn Social on Irving Street was a distance second. Arts District Park, at the corner of Central Avenue and Irving Street,
City Journals’s “Cherishing Third Places in Unhappy Times” cited a 2017 study that examined the social effects of village pubs in rural Ireland, which found that “they provided a significant social forum. Third places help glue together strong communities, enabling human flourishing though social and civic engagement.”
The Paseo on Main Street has become a spot for all kinds of events, like the Culture Crawl Summer Music Series each Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
“People working from home have invested more in their neighborhood – they have shopped locally, discovered parks and walks, met their neighbor,” Lynda Gratton, a professor of management practice at London Business School, said in this BBC story, Third places: The ways losing our local haunts hurts us. “For many this has been a point of solace and happiness. This is a discovery I believe will impact the future.”
