If you grew up in the ’60s and ’70s, you probably went downtown, strolling by retail window displays. In the ’70s and ’80s (and probably into the ’90s) you were at the mall. Then came online shopping, which grew slowly until smartphones came on the scene and the pandemic just supercharged the trend – and for more than just clothing.
That said, there are still brick-and-mortar storefronts where you can shop for clothes. So, here’s the monthly reader poll for April, sponsored by RahwayIsHappening (Rahway Special Improvement District):
This is a unique group of shops, a number of which are within walking distance of each other. Let’s start at one end of downtown with Liberty Harley-Davidson on West Milton Avenue. You can still shop there for apparel until you’re ready to save up for a hog. From there, it’s not far to East Cherry Street where two others are located – Travel Skate Shop and RV. There’s The Lite House just around the corner on Main Street and still walkable but toward the other end of downtown is Klasik Boutique – just across Irving Street from Seminary Avenue.
The others may not be downtown but are located along commercial areas within Rahway and still easily accessible, like Millie & Joy on Franklin Street at Westfield Avenue. There’s also Inspirations, a “thrift superstore” on Route 1 and Blue Line Uniforms, on St. Georges Avenue near Rahway River Park.
The poll will be open for several weeks, with results posted by the end of April. If there’s anyone missing, let me know in the comments, and there’s always the Other option. Remember, only one vote per IP address.
