City Council introduced an ordinance (O-22-22) during its June 13 regular meeting to create residential permit parking 24 hours a day, 7 days a week along Essex Street, between Monroe Street and Washington Street. The ordinance would impact a roughly two-block stretch of Essex Street across the Rahway River from downtown.
The governing body is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the legislation, followed by a final vote, at its next regular meeting, scheduled for July 11.
It’s not uncommon for residential permit parking to be created in response to a new situation. Last fall, City Council instituted resident permit parking along several streets in the vicinity of Meridia Brownstones. The first phase of the new rental development at Elizabeth and West Grand avenues was completed last year. The developer has since agreed to add more parking in later phases of the project as well as open a lot at the corner of West Scott Avenue for resident parking.
About four years ago, residents and business owners along Bridge Street – not far from Essex Street – petitioned City Council to address a parking issue. Several months later, a measure to prohibit parking at all times on the west side of Bridge Street, from East Grand Avenue to Clarkson Place, was approved.
In the same neighborhood, a developer has proposed to redevelop the block between Bridge and Monroe streets. Bridgeview would feature two buildings on the block surrounded by Clarkson Place, Bridge, Essex and Monroe streets. The concept also proposes bisecting the block with a new street, and creating several smaller park areas along the river.
