Proposal for Wheatena runs into ‘issues’
The developer behind a concept to build several hundred residential units at the former Wheatena site has discovered some issues in the title search but also estimates environmental cleanup costs could be more than originally expected.

Redevelopment agreement for artist housing
A redevelopment agreement approved last month in March requires the Redevelopment Agency to close on the million-dollar acquisition of the Elizabethtown Gas building by September for a proposed affordable housing project for artists. Commissioners approved the agreement at their March 5 meeting (Resolution 16-14).
The two-story building at 219 Central Ave. (map) (Block 167, Lot 1) has been under contract by the Redevelopment Agency since an agreement was reached in December for $1 million, with $400,000 in escrow for remediation. Developers have proposed the 71-unit Rahway Residences for the Arts, an affordable housing complex for those working in the field of arts and entertainment. The Redevelopment Agency would receive redevelopment fees of $1,000 per unit for a proposed 194-unit project on Main Street, under an agreement approved earlier this month.

2-3 months on Lafayette Village construction
Groundbreaking on Meridia Lafayette Village could be two to three months away as construction permits are in the process of being secured. By that timeline, construction could begin sometime after Memorial Day.

Meridia Water’s Edge begins leasing
Temporary Certificates of Occupancy (TCO) have been granted for the first two floors of Meridia Water’s Edge and the 108-unit complex has executed agreements with 15 tenants so far. Redevelopment Director Peter Pelissier briefed commissioners at their April 2 meeting after speaking last week with developer George Capodagli of Capodagli Property Company.
Metro Rahway tops out
Construction of Metro Rahway topped out this week with the addition of what looks to be the beginnings of the attic roof.
The five-story project along Campbell Street and West Cherry Street is expected to be completed later this year. Of the 116 units, 52 will be one-bedrooms and 62 will be two-bedrooms, situated above one level of parking. There will be 120 parking spaces, in addition to 18 on-street spaces.
