Happy hour: Friday, Feb. 26 at Flynn’s

As kind and benevolent dictator of this fine blog, I hereby decree that the next Rahway Rising happy hour will be Friday, Feb. 26 at Flynn’s Irish Pub, 1482 Main St. Let’s say, 6-ish?

Thanks to readers who offered their suggestions in comments and emails on where to meet. We decided to keep it downtown but rotate the location, and since we were at The Waiting Room the last time, we’ll just sashay over to Main Street.

We had a nice turnout in November and I hope to see some more readers who couldn’t make it the first time around. Come meet your neighbors and fellow Rahway Rising readers — see you there!

Suggestions for next happy hour gathering

It’s been two months, is it time for another Rahway Rising happy hour? It’s already mid-January and I figured I should put some more planning behind the next event. As always, I leave it open for readers to offer dates and locations for our second happy hour. I’m thinking sometime in February.

I’ve already had discussions in passing with readers who’ve proposed rotating locations to “spread the wealth” to other bars or bring it closer to the other side of town to a St. Georges Avenue establishment. Feel free to use the comments section of this post for your preferences and suggestions, or email me at rahwayrising(at)gmail.com.

I’ll be back to post some assorted news items later this week.

Former Koza’s Bar comes down this week

Demolition of Koza’s Bar started on Monday, two years after an initial proposal to build 12 units at the site was rejected.

The developer returned to the Zoning Board in October 2008 with a revised plan for nine units in a two-story structure at the West Scott Avenue site, which is about 0.88 acres. Final site plan approval was granted early this year and demolition was expected in the spring.

At that time, the developer hoped to put them on the market for about $350,000 but did not rule out renting the condos until the real estate market improves. The three-bedroom units will be about 1,600 square feet.

Thanks to reader Christine who tipped me off via the Rahway Rising Facebook page when demolition began on Monday.

Join us for happy hour tonight

Join your fellow blog readers and neighbors interested in redevelopment tonight for the first official Rahway Rising happy hour.

We’ll be meeting at The Waiting Room, 66 E. Cherry St., at around 6 p.m. or so, and I’m sure we’ll stick around for a few hours.

Since a giant banner, DJ and giveways aren’t in our budget (not that we have one), look for the guy whose picture is in the profile box below (that’s me!). Or just head for the most devastatingly handsome group of people you see…

Work moves to exterior at Station Bar & Grill

Work on the future site of Station Bar & Grill on Irving Street appears to have made its way to the front exterior of the building last week.

Some interior work looks like it was going on for a few weeks. The project was approved by the Planning Board in June, details of which can be found in the earlier post.

Waiting Room plans patio area

For those of you looking for more outdoor dining options in Rahway, take heart, there’s something on the way. Rahway’s most popular bar, The Waiting Room received Planning Board approval Tuesday night to build a 1,089-square foot concrete patio behind the building at 66 E. Cherry St.

Owner Chris Wenson said the patio would cover the entire area behind his building on East Cherry Street but only part of it would be used for outdoor dining. He expects it could be open by next spring, with as many as 10 to 15 tables.

The Waiting Room will mark its third year at its new location on Saturday. It relocated from the corner of Lewis and Irving streets to make way for the parking garage.

Station Bar & Grill slated for Irving Street

Ever been to the Station Bar and Grill in downtown Garwood? Another one’s coming to downtown Rahway.

The Planning Board last night unanimously approved a minor site plan for a vacant, one-story office building at 1530 Irving St., across from Park Square.

Bachmann’s reconstruction moving along

Could this be the fastest-moving project in Rahway?

The old Bachmann’s Tavern was knocked down last fall and construction on a new building started just a few months ago, with a frame going up by February. Six weeks later, fencing still surrounds the property at St. Georges and West Lincoln avenues but it looks like the roof, along with a steeple, has been completed and most windows installed.
