Mayor Samson Steinman delivered the annual State of the City address Friday night, announcing a few new events for 2015 while providing updates on items announced last year amid a smattering of redevelopment-related topics.

Lafayette Village to break ground this week
Construction on Meridia Lafayette Village is expected to begin this week. The 115-unit project is planned at the corner of Main and Monroe streets, where The Savoy, a 36-unit condominium project had been proposed before the real estate market imploded.

Commissioner expresses support for signage
When Tim Nash leaves Luciano’s and looks across the street, he’s reminded how terrible the vacant lot looks. There’s a fence but not much activity at the corner of Main and Monroe streets of late. Most of the action has been going on out of sight, at Zoning Board meetings and through the state permitting process, but construction on the 115-unit Meridia Lafayette Village is expected to start later this year.

2-3 months on Lafayette Village construction
Groundbreaking on Meridia Lafayette Village could be two to three months away as construction permits are in the process of being secured. By that timeline, construction could begin sometime after Memorial Day.
Redevelopment Director Peter Pelissier briefed commissioners at the April 2 Redevelopment Agency meeting about a discussion with George Capodagli, principal of West New York-based Capodagli Property Company.

‘What’s going on here?’
The annual State of the City address, typically delivered during the City Council’s annual reorganization at its first meeting of the year in January, will instead this year be delivered by Interim Mayor Samson Steinman on Feb. 5 at Hamilton Stage for Performing Arts.
