City Council introduced an ordinance to accept changes to the financial agreement for Meridia Brownstones, a 487-unit at the former Wheatena site that recently cut the ribbon on its first phase.

Phase one of The Brownstones would have to be completed in its entirety by September while phase two would begin construction by July, be completed by the end of 2022, and include six affordable units, according to changes approved to the redevelopment agreement.

The first phase of The Brownstones, about a third of the overall units approved for construction, is closing in on completion but phase two will remain up in the air for the foreseeable future.
One redevelopment project will have to wait to break ground and another may have to halt certain aspects of construction, under an executive order issued by the governor to try to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Gramercy on East Cherry Street is expected to be the next downtown development completed, with construction moving along on the adjacent Main & Monroe project and Reva Rahway farther south on Main Street. In all, the three projects total almost 500 rental units.
Almost three years after demolition of the former Wheatena buildings, construction on the first phase of a four-building, 487-unit rental development has begun.
