Over the years, there have been concepts to make East Cherry Street more of a pedestrian plaza. At least since construction of the parking garage on Lewis Street in the early 2000s, discussions have included creating easier access to East Cherry Street.
The Planning Board on Wednesday unanimously determined that six properties just outside the Central Business District (CBD) Redevelopment Area, including the former St. Mark’s Church lot, qualify for redevelopment under the state’s Local Housing and Redevelopment Law.

Demolition of the vacant St. Mark’s Church on Hamilton Street restarted recently, with much of the church building razed this week. The adjacent rectory building still remained as of Tuesday.
The vacant St. Mark’s Church property and five adjacent lots will be studied for potential redevelopment.
