City Council approved a resolution (AR-15-22) during its Jan 10. regular meeting in support of Union County investigating to determine whether a traffic signal is warranted at East Hazelwood Avenue and Stockton Street.
The county is willing to investigate the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of East Hazelwood Avenue (CR-621) and Stockton Street, according to the resolution. East Hazlewood Avenue (CR-621) is a county road between Lewis Street (CR-514) and Hart Street. Stockton Street is about three blocks west of the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) office and Routes 1&9 on the east side of the city in what is primarily a residential neighborhood. It runs from Randolph Avenue to East Hazelwood Avenue, intersecting between Clark and Witherspoon streets.
The city has received “numerous communications from residents that live on or near this section” of East Hazelwood Avenue regarding traffic safety and requests for traffic calming, according to the resolution. Discussions were initiated with the Union County Department of Engineering, Public Works & Facilities Management regarding potential traffic calming measures on this section East Hazelwood Avenue.
In spring 2018, the city approved installation of a four-way, solar-powered stop sign at the intersection of West Lake Avenue and Madison Avenue on the west side of the city. The action came less than two weeks after a pedestrian was struck and killed trying to cross the street. A petition in the wake of that incident garnered almost 1,500 signatures.
That effort was to cost about $18,000 while a traffic signal at the time was estimated to cost some $400,000 and speed humps about $9,000 each.
